Hypericum perforatum - Common St. John's wort. Black dots on petal edges only. Leaf dots are translucent. Leaves less than one inch long. Stamens numerous.

Hypericum denticulatum - Coppery St. John's wort. Petal and leaf dots may be translucent, never black. 50 to 80 stamens.

Hypericum mutilum - Dwarf St. John's wort. Small (1/4 inch) flowers, with 9 to 16 stamens. No dots on petals.

Hypericum prolificum - Shrubby St. John's wort. A woody bush; flowers are showy, with numerous stamens. No dots on petals.

Hypericum punctatum - Spotted St. John's wort. Similar to H. perforatum, but this species has black dots across the petals and leaves, not just on the edges.

Hypericum dolabriforme - Straggling St. John's wort. Our only local species with very narrow leaves. Stamens are numerous, often with red anthers. Petals may be twisted.
