Cranefly Orchid
(Tipularia discolor)

This diminutive plant produces a single leaf in the fall, which persists until spring.   
The purple underside distinguishes this from other local orchids, such as 
Aplectrum  hyemale. The flowering stalk appears briefly in July or August, after the leaf dies      back. MC  (Orchidaceae)
