Eastern Hemlock
(Tsuga canadensis)

This evergreen is common in eastern Kentucky at higher elevations. Parasites are killing large numbers of these trees, but they are still relatively easy to find. In our area, they occur occasionally on the shady side of cliffs and steep hills. Hemlocks have half- to one-inch flat needles, lighter underneath, borne singly. Mature trees stand to 75 feet tall. MC. (Pinaceae)
