Slippery elm
(Ulmus rubra)

aka red elm. Less common than U. americana, American elm. This tree is most easily distinguished by its seeds, which have slight notches at the base, unlike the American elm seeds, which have claw-like appendages on them. Early spring buds and flowers have a reddish cast; those of American elm have a tan coloration. Twigs of the slippery elm are rough-hairy. (Ulmaceae)
