American chestnut
(Castanea dentata)

This American classic was once widespread throughout the eastern U.S., but was largely eliminated by the chestnut blight during the early 20th century. It is now mostly known from saplings and stump sprouts that die before they reach maturity. Leaves are narrow and sharply toothed. MC (Fagaceae)
