Black gum
(Nyssa sylvatica)

aka sourgum, or tupelo. This is a common, small, edge tree, but left unchecked, it can grow to 60 feet. Leaves are simple and entire, with a distinct point at the tip. Pith is chambered. Bark on older trees is deeply checkered. MC (Nyssaceae)
