New England aster
(Symphyotrichum novae-angliae)

formerly Aster novae-angliae. This showy native species is one of the latest plants to bloom in the fall. Standing from two to six feet high, it features two-inch purple, yellow-centered flowers, each with 40 or more rays. Stems are stout and hairy; leaves are sessile (stemless), almost clasping.
